FrostShield Mechanical and Unit Control Technology – Addison

Addison’s FrostShield is a new mechanical and unit control technology that extends the operating range of air-source heat pumps and removes the need for the unit to enter defrost mode during heating operation. This feature extends the life of HVAC equipment, has the potential to save a tremendous amount of electrical energy, and improves occupant comfort.

“Our innovation team set out to offer solutions for electrification initiatives,” said Ross Miglio, president of Addison. “We thought how great heat pump technology could be if only it never had to defrost in cold climates. Gus Olivera, director of engineering at Addison, reapplied some of our proven DOAS refrigeration expertise and FrostShield was born.”

At Addison, FrostSheild has been applied to dedicated outdoor air systems (DOAS), but it can be applied to any air-source heat pump system, including chillers, unitary equipment in both the residential and commercial markets, and other refrigeration and process control systems. Defrost has been an accepted barrier in the air-source heat pump market that has led to excessive energy usage, noise, lack of comfort, and the inability to apply in colder climates. Moving forward, these obstacles can be overcome by using FrostSheild technology.

“For decades, air-source heat pumps have not been widely implemented due to defrosting changes, which leads to high-energy use and limited functionality in cold climates”, said Olivera. “Now, Addison will revolutionize the way our industry utilizes air source heat pump technology.”

AMPLIFY Overhead Fans with Northern Light Technology – Greenheck

Greenheck incorporated the patented Northern Light® UV-C technology into its line of AMPLIFY™ overhead high-volume, low-speed (HVLS) fans today.

“We’re excited to add this technology to our AMPLIFY overhead fans,” said Tim Busby, general manager, fans, Greenheck. “This applied innovation will truly make a difference in indoor spaces.”

AMPLIFY with Northern Light’s unique, patented design combines the air-cleaning benefit of upper-room UV lighting with the air circulation capabilities of overhead fans. Upper-room UV lighting systems (also known as UVGI) have been used for decades to help control airborne pathogens in medical facilities and are recommended by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), ASHRAE, and other organizations as part of a multilayer strategy to reduce the risk of COVID-19 transmission. The addition of air movement has been shown to increase UV-C’s effectiveness.

With Northern Light technology, non-ozone generating UV-C bulbs are installed inside the AMPLIFY fan blades and positioned toward the tips of the blades where the majority of air movement occurs for the most effective inactivation of pathogens. The uplight design directs UV-C light away from occupants and into the upper room, where air is being circulated by the fan, minimizing UV radiation exposure for safer system operation. The result is a system that is more effective than traditional air-cleaning technologies at inactivating airborne pathogens and distributing clean air in occupied spaces.

Northern Light technology is currently available on AMPLIFY DC-5 overhead fans in four diameters ranging from 6-16 feet nominally with more models and sizes to be added.

Heat2O Commercial Hot Water Heat Pumps – Mitsubishi Electric Trane HVAC US

Mitsubishi Electric Trane HVAC US' (METUS') Heat2O™️ is an all-electric domestic hot water heating system designed to improve sustainability and reduce energy consumption in multifamily buildings and large-scale commercial facilities.

Domestic hot water (DHW) accounts for roughly 25% of annual energy usage in typical multifamily buildings and is among the largest single energy uses of energy for new multifamily construction in the Northwest. The Heat2O heat pump water heater (QAHV-N136TAU-HPB(-BS)) reduces the environmental impact of DHW through energy-efficient operation while using CO2, a natural and environmentally friendly refrigerant with a global warming potential (GWP) of 1 and an ozone depletion potential (ODP) of 0. Able to produce high-volume DHW without fossil fuels, Heat2O can help multifamily buildings, offices, hotels, gyms, educational institutions, and other large-scale and commercial facilities qualify for sustainability certifications or achieve zero-energy and passive house status.

METUS provides Heat2O as an engineered solution with comprehensive technical support. The system includes pre-assembled and pre-plumbed components designed and selected to ensure installation quality and ensure optimal performance of the heat pump. Components include hot water storage tanks, swing tanks, secondary heat exchangers, and variable-speed secondary circuit pumps.

Heat2O transfers ambient thermal energy from outdoor air to potable water by cycling refrigerant. Natural CO2 refrigerant enables Heat2O to supply hot water up to 176° F even in low ambient conditions without burning fossil fuels.

Using Mitsubishi Electric’s patented Twisted Spiral Gas Cooler, the system achieves highly efficient heat exchange with three refrigerant lines wrapped around a twisted water pipe.

The CO2 refrigerant flows in the opposite direction of the water. Running the refrigerant lines along the pipe’s grooves increases the heat conductive area while the spiral helps create a vortex in the pipe, accelerating the turbulence effect of water and reducing pressure loss in the heat exchanger. Additionally, the copper pipes make for double-walled construction.

GLO UV C Upper Room Fixtures – UV Resources

The Germicidal Light Overhead  (GLO™) UV C disinfection upper room fixture series from UV Resources™ now includes two open-style luminaries designed to irradiate and inactivate airborne pathogens in occupied spaces with high ceilings (12 feet and taller).

The GLO open fixtures for tall spaces direct UV energy upward and outward to create an intense zone of ultraviolet germicidal irradiation (UVGI) or UV-C in the upper air. At the same time, occupants can safely go about their business in the lower portion of a room.

This increase in irradiance levels translates to greater UV-C coverage, enabling infection control specialists to treat more areas with fewer fixtures and saving both cost and energy.

These fixtures are ideal against droplet nuclei generated by coughing, sneezing, or talking, as this expelled air rises to the upper area of a space where it is exposed to UV-C energy and infectious agents are inactivated. With UV-C upper-room luminaries in place, the UVGI energy disrupts the RNA/DNA in viruses and the DNA in bacteria to prevent a pathogen from replicating and spreading infection.

The GLO provides upper-room UV-C disinfection treatment solutions for spaces ranging from 150-1,500 square feet. They are offered in two models, the GLO 900-OF, which treats about 900 square feet; and GLO 1500-OF, which treats about 1,500-square feet of space.

Like the GLO family’s three baffled or louvered-type luminaries — ideal for rooms with ceilings at least 12 feet high — the new open-style units use a parabolic reflector to optimize the germicidal UV C output of the fixture. The traditional baffle system is replaced by an adjustable extended director on the bottom of the fixture, which protects room occupants from stray UV C.
